First Sunday Forum: Spirituality in the Book of Common Prayer

  • Emmanuel Episcopal Church 811 Cathedral Street Baltimore, MD, 21201 United States (map)

Join us Sunday, January 8 at 9:10 in the Brent Room for the first First Sunday Forum of 2023: Spirituality in the Book of Common Prayer, a discussion on the BCP led by biblical scholar Derek Olson.

The Christian family contains a wide variety of spiritual paths—Franciscan spirituality, Ignatian spirituality, and so on. But many don’t realize that there is an Anglican spirituality embedded within our Book of Common Prayer. More than just the Sunday service book, its pages offer a set of disciplines that has formed saints for more than 500 years. Join us for a discussion of the prayer book used to its fullness as a guide to the spiritual life.

Derek Olsen is the author of Inwardly Digest: The Prayer Book as Guide to a Spiritual Life. He earned a Ph.D. in New Testament from Emory University in 2011. His research focuses on the interpretation of scripture, particularly in the first thousand years of the Church, with a specialty in early medieval monasticism and liturgical spirituality. He has published on a variety of topics including the prayer book, Old English monastic liturgy, and the Psalms. He lives in Baltimore with his wife, who is an Episcopal priest and Army-National Guard chaplain, and their two daughters.
